OPPO UDP-203: Classic Easy-to-use Blu-ray player

OPPO UDP-203, like previous models, is designed very competently. The design is ideal: strict, laconic, devoid of embellishments, but at the same time it does not look rustic. The basis is the latest MediaTek OP8591 chipset. It is notable for the fact that it can decode not only 4K video with HDR10, but also Dolby Vision.

To output digital signals, as before, two HDMI outputs are used: one universal version 2.0a and the second 1.4, respectively. This was done not so much for compatibility with outdated receivers and AV amplifiers, but rather in order to completely eliminate video switching by third-party devices (because even the newest of them somehow change the video signal, for example, lowering the bit rate from 12 to 10 or narrowing its dynamic range).

For the same reason, OPPO also provides an HDMI input in its players for other sources – game consoles or Smart TV dongles. Moreover, in this case, this input “passes” the signal practically unchanged, at least 12-bit video with 4K resolution “passes” through it. It should also be said about the audio part of the player. Inside there is a high-quality Asahi Kasei AK4458VN DAC, the same one used by Marantz and Denon in their top receivers.

Therefore, you can do without a receiver if you have separate final amplifiers that will receive the analog signal. Thus, OPPO UDP-203 can be safely left, if not the only, then the main source in the system. After all, this is not a purely video player, but rather a universal player of optical discs and files. In addition to Blu-ray of all types and DVD-Video, the player plays DVD-Audio, SACD and standard CDs. Moreover, it can also play copies of SACD recorded on DVD discs.

In addition to the “standard” set of MKV, AVI, MP4, TS with Full HD video, FLAC and ALAC high resolution and other sound standards, this player easily plays 4K video of any variations intended for non-professional equipment (including 10 and 12 -bit with frequencies up to 60 frames per second). Moreover, it plays back extended range HDR10 files captured by cameras, passing metadata to the display device. Moreover, it doesn’t matter to the player what container this video is in – it also “reads” MKV with 4K, unlike all other UHD Blu-ray players.

But the most interesting thing is that it doesn’t matter from which source the files are played. It plays them from USB drives, flash drives (for this it has as many as three connectors, two of which have version 3.0) and over the network, both wirelessly (there is a built-in 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapter with high bandwidth) and and via Ethernet. The latter option is clearly preferable, since the player supports a Gigabit network and is not limited only to the DLNA standard. Servers with SMB are also available for it.

This device does not accept only disk images in the form of ISO and BDMV files, opening the latter as simple folders and quietly playing video files in them. But this is only if you have factory firmware! If you install a custom one at your own risk, then the images will be played with the same success, including 3D remixes.
